Pressure pain usually means the tooth needs attention
When a tooth hurts mainly when you bite down, the cause is often more specific than general sensitivity. A crack, a high bite after recent treatment, inflammation around the root, or a failing restoration can all create pain with pressure.
Because several different problems can feel similar, the exam matters more than trying to guess the diagnosis at home.
Why the pain can seem to come and go
Some bite-related pain is noticeable only with chewing, clenching, or a certain angle of pressure. That can make patients think it is not serious when it is actually the early stage of a more involved issue.
If the tooth also feels sensitive to hot, cold, or release after biting, that gives your dentist more clues about what may be happening inside the tooth.
When to call promptly
If the tooth hurts sharply, feels loose, or is paired with swelling, you should call sooner rather than later. Early care may prevent the problem from becoming more painful and more expensive.
Even when the pain is tolerable, it is still worth checking before the tooth takes more stress.
