Start by cleaning the area and reducing swelling
A cracked tooth can feel minor at first or very obvious right away. Some patients feel a sharp bite, some notice temperature sensitivity, and some only realize something is wrong when chewing suddenly feels strange. The first goal is not to diagnose the exact type of crack by yourself. The first goal is to protect the area and avoid making it worse.
Current emergency guidance for cracked teeth is straightforward. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area, and place a cold compress on the outside of the face if swelling is starting.[1] If a piece of tooth broke off, save it if you can. If there is active bleeding from the area, use clean gauze with light pressure. Then call a dentist as soon as possible so the tooth can be evaluated before the crack spreads further.[1] [3]
Why cracked teeth can hurt in inconsistent ways
One reason people delay care is that cracked-tooth pain is not always constant. The American Association of Endodontists explains that cracked teeth often cause erratic pain when chewing and sudden sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. In many cases, the pain comes and goes, which can make the tooth seem less urgent than it really is.[2]
That stop-and-start pattern does not mean the problem is harmless. It often means the crack is flexing under pressure or the inside of the tooth is becoming irritated. At Quality Family Dentistry, Dr. Eric Klein DMD helps Timonium patients understand whether the tooth may need smoothing, bonding, a crown, root canal treatment, or another form of protection before a smaller problem turns into a larger emergency.
What not to do while you wait to be seen
Do not keep chewing on the cracked side just to see whether it improves. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods, and do not test the tooth repeatedly with hot or cold drinks. If pain medicine is needed, use common over-the-counter options only as directed on the label unless a physician has told you otherwise. A temporary reduction in pain does not mean the crack has healed.
It is also important not to assume every crack can wait for a routine visit next week. If the tooth is sharply painful when biting, the crack is visible, part of the tooth broke away, or the area is becoming more sensitive or swollen, it is smarter to call promptly. If you need broader guidance before you come in, our emergency dentistry page and crowns, bridges, and dentures page can help you understand the kinds of treatment that may be discussed after the exam.
When Timonium patients should call right away
A cracked tooth deserves urgent attention when biting hurts, temperature sensitivity is getting stronger, the tooth looks broken, or the crack followed trauma to the face or mouth. Cleveland Clinic's emergency guidance also notes that uncontrolled bleeding, broken facial bones, or more serious injury signs belong in urgent medical or emergency-room care rather than a wait-and-see approach.[3]
